Senior Project - Oh, Hello Again

Oh, Hello Again is a short 3D animated film that focuses on the many struggles and emotions of being an artist. The story follows an unnamed composer who struggles to write anything compelling on their piano. They eventually become extremely frustrated that negative thoughts and emotions start to spiral out of control. With some guidance and reassurance from their mother, the young composer realizes to stop being so judgemental about themselves and to just enjoy the process of creating music. Many of the inspirations for this project can be traced back to my own experiences as a multimedia artist. Things like anxiety, burnout, creative block, fear, and judgment from others are all struggles I’m slowly learning to overcome.

When I started brainstorming for my project last summer, out of the dozen or so concepts I envisioned, I kept circling back to this idea. The overall story and characters went through several revisions before I was happy with the final concept. An earlier version of the plot followed the main character being transported to a dream-like realm, where a tour guide-like character showed the main character around and eventually tried to cheer them up. But I didn't like where that story was going, so I decided to rewrite and replace this tour guide character with the main character’s mother instead, as I thought showing the bond between mother and child was a more emotionally rewarding resolution.

Around the same time, I became infatuated with people with TV’s as heads, and decided to incorporate them into the designs of the characters. With this in mind, I purposely left the main character unnamed as they’re not supposed to represent anybody in particular. Rather, I want the main character to be somebody who viewers can project themselves onto and relate towards with their own creative experiences.
